Continued popularity of smartphones driving sales in the category
The mobile accessories market has grown by almost a third during the past year, driven by the continued popularity in smartphones.
New research by GfK found the category saw its volume sales grow by 32%. This contrasted with the wider durable goods category, which includes the likes of home appliances, where total volume sales fell 4% in the year to June 2012. Explaining why phone accessories are bucking the trend, GfK said: A key reason behind the growth of V is the continued penetration of smartphones within the UK consumer market. Consumers are using their smartphone for more applications and taking greater care of their device due to the average contract for 24-month contracts.
The research follows the launch of the iPhone 5 and the expected boost it will give to the accessories market. Carphone Warehouse said it had its biggest ever weekend for accessories sales in the days following the handsets launch last month. Distributor 20:20 Mobile said the iPhone accessories market was worth £100m.
